SAN CANESSA
-
San Canessa is a Salvadoran visual artist and movement researcher based in Oga Po’ge, NM. Working with Water as both medium and collaborator, San creates site-specific abstractions that explore the relationship between movement and emotion. Their work embodies the aesthetic of change—a fluid dialogue between beginnings and endings, containment and release. Through imaginal and intuitive creations, San explores change and how aesthetics can support its integration through emotionality and melancholy. Each piece emerges through the ritual of collection and evaporation, becoming an imprint of a felt sense.
San earned a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies from California Institute of Integral Studies, a Postgraduate Fine Art Certificate from Glasgow School of Art, and is currently pursuing an MA in Art Therapy at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM. They have been influenced by the movement arts and through their collaborations and participation in workshops and research.

As a water-based site-specific artist, my practice revolves around the intimate relationship between landscape, body, and Water. Through intuitive exploration, I capture the essence of emotions, documenting the felt sense and movement during Water collection. I create imprints using pigments which embody the fluidity of emotions as an abstract language of change.
Central to my work is the preservation of an ivory background, reminiscent of scientific displays of particles in space. This juxtaposition of positive and negative space reflects shifting perspectives and the imprint of water, embodying a practice of containment and consistency; holding the paradox of life and death, the beginning and ending. Water, with its elemental energy and ties to the collective unconscious, serves as both medium and metaphor.
In Ra Di In Go is a body of work created from Rain Water collected in Oga Po’ge & Indigo cultivated in El Salvador. The title is giving reference to the intonation of these pieces. This pigment represents a part of my identity and a significant aspect of my yearly migration home. The pieces selected are aesthetic inquiries into the generosity of depth which arise through simplicity. They are symbols of gestural linguistics representing the liquidity and non-captive nature of change.
